Stoneham Democrats hold caucus Feb. 2

STONEHAM, MA - Registered Democrats in Stoneham will be holding a caucus on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at 2 p.m. to elect delegates and alternates to the 2002 Massachusetts Democratic Convention to be held Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the Worcester Centrum. At the Convention the delegates will vote to nominate candidates for elected statewide offices including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General.

The Democrats of the Town of Stoneham will be electing 15 delegates and six alternates equally divided between men and women to represent Stoneham at the 2002 Convention. The apportioned number of delegates has been allotted based upon a formula giving equal weight to Democratic party registrants and the average vote for Democratic candidates in the last general elections for Governor and President.

Charles F. Houghton, Chair-man of the Democratic Town Committee will call the caucus at Town Hall, Selectmen Hearing Room, 35 Central Street, Stoneham at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002.

The caucus is open to all registered Democrats, those ineligible to register, and media representatives. Only those Democrats registered to vote in the Town of Stoneham are eligible to participate and vote in this caucus. There is no proxy or absentee voting. Candidates may make a two-minute statement and may distribute materials on their behalf. All ballots are written and secret. Those candidates receiving the greatest number of votes on the first ballot shall be elected. Slate making is allowed, but no special preference will be allowed. There is no quorum requirement and no admission fee or charge at the caucus.

Discrimination on the basis of race, sex, age, color, creed, national origin, religion, ethnic identity, or economic status in the conduct of the caucus is strictly prohibited. Challenges to the delegate selection process can be filed at the Massachusetts Democratic Party, 129 Portland Street, Boston, MA 02114 no later than ten days after caucus date.
