STONEHAM, MA -

•Honoring Dr. King. Stoneham Against Racism and Hate will host the Second Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration on Jan. 21 from 2 - 6 p.m. at the Town Hall.

Shaw’s, Stop ‘n Shop and Colarusso’s Bakery are sponsoring the event. Performers from the Boys & Girls Club will be featured among other acts.

“We hope to get more people out this year,” said event organizer and Stoneham Against Racism and Hate President Cheryl Sanders.

•Golf course contract. The town went out to bid for the operation of the clubhouse and pro shops at the Unicorn and Oaks golf courses this week.

The deadline for submitting bids is Jan. 31. The town has scheduled a site visit for interested parties on Jan. 24.

•Next Town Planner. Once more with feeling, Town Administrator David Berry hired a Town Planner last week. Selectmen did not vote to reject Michael Gallerani of Plymouth, so he will get the job after contract negotiations and hopefully make it past day one and beyond.

•Background checks. The unfortunate discovery that former Town Planner, George Russell (three hours on the job), had been arrested this summer and charged with possessing child pornography has led the town to reevaluate hiring procedures.

Berry said he plans to meet with Town Counsel Bill Solomon and the town’s labor counsel from Collins, Loughrin and Pelloquin to figure out what rights the town has to check into the past of prospective employees.

•Safety boxes available. Elderly and disabled homeowners are eligible for special boxes, accessible only by the Police and Fire Departments for emergency access.

Keys to the home are placed in each box. The town has purchased the boxes, but installation will cost residents around $50.
