STONEHAM, MA - The 2002 town election season has begun with candidates pulling papers at Town Hall as voters ease their minds into the decision making gear.

Candidates can pull nomination papers for the April 2 election until 5 p.m. on Feb. 8. The signed forms must be submitted to the Board of Registrars by 5 p.m. on Feb. 12 and filed with the Town Clerk by the close of business on Feb. 26. And Feb. 28 is the last day to object or withdraw. Also, financial reports from candidates are due on March 25 and May 2.

Stoneham citizens must be registered to vote by 8 p.m. on March 13 to vote on April 2.

As of this week, four candidates have pulled papers:

August Niewenhous of Valdora Drive is running for re-election to one five-year opening on the Planning Board.

William Jordan of Martin Louis Way is running for re-election to one three-year opening on the Board of Assessors.

David Sheils of Collincote Street is running for one of two three-year openings on the School Committee. Sheils was appointed to the School Committee last year to fill the seat left by Mary Pecoraro after she was elected to the Board of Selectmen in the April 2001 town election. That term ends this year. Longtime Chairwoman Jeanne Craigie’s term is also up, and she has decided not to run.

Edward Pinato of Bow Street Court is running for the Housing Authority seat left open by the death of Amelio “Mickey” Marrocco. Mr. Marrocco was in the middle of a term that runs through 2004.

Other openings include Darin Leahy’s three-year term on the Board of Selectmen, Mike Rolli’s three-year term on the Board of Health and two three-year terms on the Board of Library Trustees held now by Rocco Ciccarello and Patricia Kilty.

Some or all of these incumbents may pull papers in the coming weeks. The Stoneham Independent will keep voters posted.
