Elections
John J. Scullin of 216 North St. pulled nomination papers for Board of Health on Jan. 24. Scullin is running for the first time. Board of Health member Louis Golini recently announced he would not run for re-election.
William N. Sullivan of 15 Charles St. pulled papers for Planning Board on Jan. 25. He is also seeking his first term.
Mann Chemical
The independent engineering firm, Weston and Sampson, will present its report on the new Central School site and the surrounding area to the selectmen at the Feb. 1 meeting of the board.
Stoneham Parents for Healthy Schools still have some concerns which they say they plan to address at the meeting.
MDC Rink
Abutters to Metropolitan District Commission land where Commissioner David Balfour has proposed building an ice hockey rink want to know what is going on.
Selectmen and Balfour walked the property Saturday, Jan. 15, at 9 a.m. The meeting was posted 48 hours earlier.
Procedure was followed, but residents have expressed a desire for earlier warning before the next meeting to discuss the MDC plan.
Bain appeal
Contractor and Stevens Street resident Dennis Bain is appealing a building department request to enter his home to inspect a bathroom installation.
Bain received a permit in November 1998 to install the bathroom but was later asked to submit to a site inspection.
According to discussion at the Jan. 20 Board of Appeals meeting, Building Inspector Gene Argiro wants to confirm whether work has commenced on Bain's bathroom because if work has not begun after six months, the permit expires.
Bain is asking the Board of Appeals to decide whether or not work began within six months of his receipt of the permit. He contends that it did and that the site inspection is unnecessary.
The issue was continued until the Feb. 17 meeting.
Valley Road
Stop signs will not be placed on Fairlane Road or Barbara Road at the intersections with Valley Road, after careful examination by the police and Public Works.
Visioning Project
The Community Visioning Project identified and prioritized 101 goals Stoneham citizens said were important for the town to achieve.
Community Development Director and ex officio Visioning Committee member Steve Sadwick presented a list of these goals which are "in progress" at the Jan. 18 selectmen's meeting. Expanded use of Spot Pond is an example.
Sadwick says the group hopes to pursue as many of the goals as possible. The selectmen support the effort, but before they grant money or authority to the committee, the board plans to readvertise for volunteers.
The Visioning Committee has been together since September 1998, and Selectmen Chairman Al Conti said he wanted to make sure everyone who wanted to pitch in had the opportunity.
BU track meet
This Saturday all day at the Boston University indoor track facility on Commonwealth Avenue many recent Stoneham High School graduates are running in the Terrier Classic Track Meet.
The competitors include Tim and Maura McCusker, Anthony Ragucci, Sheila Sullivan, Kristen Cullen and Christina Leo.
